One of the largest magnets that lures people to southern Utah even during the hot summer months is the outdoor amphitheatre at Tuacahn. The amphitheater is located just 5-10 minutes from the city center of St. George and cools considerably at night which makes it a very comfortable venue. The red cliffs that characterize most of the area provide the perfect backdrop for plays, musicals, and concerts of every genre. This season, Tuacahn is featuring the Broadway hit musicals Mary Poppins, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Starlight Express. Later this year, attendees can enjoy Disney’s Mulan, Elf a Musical along with concert tributes to the Beatles and the Eagles. Tuacahn really has something for everyone.
To beat the heat, we spent an evening under the misters watching Tuacahn’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie – a Broadway musical that won multiple Tony Awards including “Best Musical”. The show is incredibly family friendly: entertaining for adults and appropriate for children. The story stars Millie Dillmount who escapes the trap of her hometown in Kansas to New York City where she hopes to make it big and find a boss/husband who will allow her to live the high life. With no money and no prospects, she fares her way through the Big Apple of the Roaring 20’s full of flappers, speakeasies, and really great jazz – all to learn that the “modern” life she seeks can still include timeless commodities…like true love. The story is heart-warming and entertaining and the music had us on our feet. The most pleasant surprise? The talent. Tuacahn attracts actors and actresses whose talent would compete with any found on Broadway. The acting was superb and the vocals were truly riveting! All of this performed in an outdoor amphitheater (fireworks!) that allowed us to watch the sun set against the red rocks while the show went on. A very memorable night.
If you’re interested in seeing a high class show for a great price, check out the Tuacahn flyer found in each Coral Springs Resort suite or check out their website: www.tuacahn.org and book your ticket today.
***Note: due to the temperature drop at night, it’s advised to bring a sweater or blanket to the theater during the fall months
