We’re Off to See the Wizard at Tuacahn!

Wizard of Oz in the Desert

The Wizard of Oz opened last weekend at Tuacahn and what a show it is! The Wizard of Oz the musical is a stage production of the beloved film adaptation of Frank L. Baum’s classic novel. Produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber, this timeless tale of dreaming big comes to life on stage, complete with the new songs as well as the classics that made the Dorothy’s story famous: “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” and many more.

Once again, Tuacahn proves the ideal venue to host a musical such as this. The rising red rocks create an other-worldly backdrop for this fantastical story and add contrast to the green and yellow hues that dominate the stage. Audience members are drawn close to the story by the yellow brick road that extends out into the amphitheater. For those that are sitting further back, the show is made more accessible by the addition of three large screens that are used to feature backdrop images in full color and resolution. The screens also display characters and images that would normally reside in a different frame; just one of the many creative solutions to adapting a film for stage performance. Like all Tuacahn productions, The Wizard of Oz features extraordinary, Broadway-caliber talent. The Scarecrow will amaze you with his flexibility, the Tin Man will convince you he is truly made of tin, the Cowardly Lion will have you laughing at his misplaced gutlessness, and Dorothy will endear herself to your heart instantly. The story becomes so real that you may even tear up as Dorothy says goodbye to her new friends as she returns home.
