The Perfect Burger
Nothing says summer quite like a homemade hamburger straight off the grill with all the delicious fixings. Gratefully, this perfect taste of summer is a cost-effective crowd pleaser – a go-to for your next family reunion. Here, I want to give you just a few tips on how to make your next family BBQ a huge hit.
First off: season your burger.
This may seem like an intuitive suggestion, but you’d be surprised at what a difference the right seasoning can make. I suggest using seasoning salt or montreal steak seasoning paired with Worcestershire sauce. Before grilling, liberally season one side of each patty with salt/seasoning and sauce. Then, once the patties are on the grill, season the other side of each. It’s a great way to insure that each burger is tasty before the other fixings are added.
Secondly: choose delicious pairings…
….like BACON. Nothing compliments a juicy burger better than bacon! Now, before you go and cook bacon on the stove or in the microwave, making make your entire condo smell like breakfast, consider grilling the bacon on the BBQ. It’s fast, efficient, and delicious. Plus, it requires no extra clean up. After selecting a hearty, thick bacon that will hold up to the grill, follow these easy steps or this short video tutorial and you’ll be in good shape.
Another great pairing is cheese. Though Kraft singles are an easy choice, the cheese snob in me recommends getting REAL cheese to pair with your delicious burger. Most grocery stores have sliced selections of cheddar, swiss, and provolone cheese. Using real cheese saves your cheeseburger from that plastic taste that typically accompanies processed cheeses. Better yet, let the cheese add complexity to your burger. For a real zing, select a spicy monterey jack cheese and serve it with sliced jalapenos (be sure to remove the seeds!). OR grab a creamy goat cheese or cream cheese and spread it over a bun topped with caramelized onions for a sweet, salty duo that is unmatched.
Don’t forget fresh produce like onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. These toppings will add a freshness to compliment the intense flavor and texture of your burgers.
Regardless of what you choose, make sure the flavors of your pairings marry well together.
Thirdly: provide an array of sauces.
The tried-and-true pairing of ketchup and mustard is a must-have, but I suggest providing other sauces that allow your family to get creative. For example, take your average cheeseburger, topped with bacon and add barbeque sauce instead of ketchup or mustard and BOOM – you have a gourmet burger! I like mayonnaise on my burger, but when I add brown sugar and soy sauce to the mayo first making a savory sauce, it really sings. Ranch dressing is another great option. Get creative! You’ll be surprised at the results.
So, you see, there is no one “perfect” burger – everyone has a preference! Your job as head chef and burger expert is to provide pairings and sauces that allow your family to build their own version of the perfect burger. So, get to work! Fortunately for you, every suite at Coral Springs Resort includes a BBQ located out on the patio of each unit. With this guide in hand, you may be responsible for making this family reunion the best yet, but be careful – your family may not want you to leave the grill.
